Hello lovelies,
In this blog post, I will be doing a double feature about the two of my favorite romance books I read this February; I figured it was fitting as it is the month of love. I read Ice Breaker and Wildfire by Hannah Grace; I had heard lots of things about these books all over the internet on TikTok and Instagram. Some of it was bad, and some were good, so I decided to take the plunge and make my mind up about them for myself. First, I would like to say that I love that these books do not contain miscommunication tropes, as they drive me up a wall! Ice Breaker is the first one I read, as it is the first book in her series. I will say that they can be read on their own as individuals, but her writing style does encompass an entire world, so all the books involve characters you meet in the first book, making every book feel like a spin-off. The main character in Ice Breaker is Anastasia Allen is a professional ice skater on her way to the Olympic team, and Nate Hawkins is a professional hockey player looking to make it in the NHL. This book is so fluffy and feel good. I absolutely loved it. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good dark romance, but something about a sweet, fluffy romance book makes me giggle and kick my feet. There are a lot of twists and turns in this book that I wasn't expecting, lots of small issues that continuously prevent Nate and Anastasia from reaching their goals. However, I was pleased with the ending, which felt realistic. What I don't love about romance books is that they often set unrealistic goals or love, and this book doesn't have either of those. My favorite thing about this book is that both characters, who are college-age adults, communicate like college-age adults and not like teenagers. Something that drives me absolutely crazy in most romance books is how the main characters, no matter how hard they try, cannot communicate. I loved that this was not a problem in this book; both characters had great communication. Now, while I loved Icebreaker, Wildfire is 10 times better, and that's pretty difficult since I really liked the first book, but I enjoyed Wildfire much more. We get to follow a character we meet in Icebreaker, Russ. In the summer following the first book, he works at a camp over the summer to make a little extra money. There, he meets a girl named Aurora, who happens to not only go to the same college as him but has also worked at the camp every summer since she was a little kid when she before that attended the camp. Their love story is snarky, witty, and lovable. Again, something I loved was no miscommunication; they acted and discussed things like adults, and there were clear boundaries and respect on both sides. It's refreshing to read a romance book with these elements, and it doesn't make me feel like a 16-year-old. The camp they go to has a no-staff fraternizing rule, which might be difficult for these two; the weekend before they started the camp, the hockey guys we meet in the first book had a going away party at the beginning of summer. Russ and Arora meet during this party, and I would say there's quite a bit of fraternization. The spice isn't extremely spicy; I would say on a scale of one to five chili peppers that it's a solid 3; it's not extremely dirty, but it had me blushing. I will say that all the spice fits in well with the plot. It's not just there as fluff, which I enjoy as I don't read a book just for the spice; I like the plot to be there. Overall, I would say that these books rate 8/9 out of 10 in my mind. Read them, and let me know what you think; happy love month. I hope everybody had a wonderful Valentine's Day and a happy reading!
