Hello lovelies,
Sorry, it's been so long since I've posted any updates on the books I have read. I plan to add a couple more reviews this month and to kick it off; I'm reviewing Dungeons and Drama by Kristy Boyce. A YA romance novel about Riley, a girl who loves musical theater, and Nathan, a nerdy charming boy who works at Riley's dad's gaming shop. Riley gets in trouble and is forced to work for eight weeks at her dad's store after school. This book involves so many adorable tropes, one of which is fake dating. This book has cute humor, I found myself actually laughing out loud when reading this, which, to me, is a good sign of a good book. When a book can make you laugh out loud, it's doing its job, especially when it's marketed as a romance book. Also, as somebody who plays Dungeons and Dragons and loves a lot of nerdy things, this book was so wonderful to read. There is character building and actual campaign play, as well as many other nerdy things, that show the author's dedication to making this book realistic. Additionally, as somebody who grew up doing ballet and then transitioned into musical and traditional theater, this was the perfect book for me. With both main characters having an intense interest in things that hold so much value in my life, it was really enjoyable to read. There's also a subplot romance between two other characters who play in Riley and Nathans campaign. I got so excited at one point in the book because while there are many nerdy aspects of the book, one of my favorite movies is Monty Python and the Holy Grail; the characters end up introducing Riley and her friend to the movie and quote it. Honestly, it made my day. This is a young adult book, so there are no smutty aspects. Thank goodness I cannot handle books about teenagers that contain smut; it makes me feel really uncomfortable to read as someone who's in their mid-20s. However, this author does a great job of balancing the simplistic things I think we all swooned for when we were 15. Like holding someone's hand in the hallway or getting excited when someone walks you to your locker. There were also many moments when they would be fake dating, and because they did not like each other, they would be pretending to flirt but whispering insults at each other. It was absolutely adorable and also fits within the Grumpy X Sunshine trope as well as loosely the enemies-to-lovers trope. One of my favorite parts of this book was that the characters ended up going for a late-night drive together, and for me, when I was in high school, this was one of my favorite things to do with the guy I had a crush on. So, in some ways, this story was a bit nostalgic for me. I do wish that this book had existed when I was in high school, as somebody who was an extreme nerd it would have been nice to read romance stories that represented the things that I was interested in and had people who seemed familiar in them. Do you have any recommendations of books that have similar aspects please let me know I will happily read them. Let me know if you guys read it, and if you enjoy it, happy reading.
